Car washing and waxing is perennially underrated!

We’re a paint and body shop in Augusta, so naturally, we do a lot of retouching and focusing on getting a vehicle’s exterior to look like new (in addition to the many repairs we perform!). Sometimes, though, we see damage that really never has to happen.

One of those issues stems from washing and waxing.

Keeping cars fresh and looking great is a multi-billion dollar industry, and for good reason: It’s one of the easiest ways to make your vehicle more enjoyable to drive and keep its resale value higher by maintaining a good finish!

The issue is that many people don’t follow best practices when it comes to a solid wash and wax, and that can degrade the paint over time. So, how do you ensure your car looks its best without damaging it?

The first thing to do is to park your car in a cool, shady spot. You don’t want soap or minerals from the water drying on your car! The cooler you can keep the car, the better.

A good car wash and wax is something we often don't see owners doing when their vehicle comes to our paint and body shop in Augusta! The products you select also matter. Some products aren’t properly pH-balanced, which means they can have poor long-term effects on your vehicle’s paint. Feel free to call and ask us what we recommend to use!

Ensuring you rinse off the microfiber towel you use to remove dirt and other deposits on the vehicle often will keep the towel clean, preventing any scratches from the towel holding dirt and grime.

Finally, it’s time to wax. We recommend waxing every few months, though it does depend on what product you use. Some last longer and offer better protection than others, so the phrase “you get what you pay for” can apply in this instance. The conditions your car endures also impacts the wax – does it park under trees that drop sap onto it? Is it in a parking garage, or subjected to high heat and radiation in direct sunlight all day?

Regular maintenance of the exterior, much like on the vehicle’s engine, transmission, and other systems, helps keep it at the peak of its performance and value! So make sure to approach the paint and body work with the same care and attention to detail – and feel free to contact us with any questions!
